The new frontiers of innovation

Rai Way combines the management of broadcasting infrastructures with ongoing research and experimentation, with the aim of developing innovative services to support new digital applications and the national ecosystem. From next-generation networks to vertical solutions based on emerging technologies, the company leverages its infrastructural and technological expertise to pave the way for new applications and use cases.

Drones and IoT: technologies for the territory

Rai Way is piloting a radio and logistics infrastructure for drones in BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) mode, based on avionics standards and implemented at its own sites.

The first phase of the project focuses on control and command radio links (C2-Link), essential to ensure safe, reliable long-distance flights. These links address the needs of:

  • drone operators, who require stable, certifiable services;
  • regulators (ENAC and MIMIT), tasked with defining safety standards and a clear framework for frequency use.

Since 2020, trials have been conducted at the Rai Way Center in Monte Peglia, integrating radio equipment and VTOL drones.

The second phase envisages the introduction of autonomous shelter and charging stations for VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) drones, with the goal of:

  • making the BVLOS infrastructure fully autonomous, without field personnel;
  • enabling new vertical services, from environmental monitoring to the prevention and management of natural events.

These applications are based on data acquired from sensors on board the drones and from field IoT networks, processed using artificial intelligence and deep learning algorithms.
