The future of broadcasting through 5G: from research to real-world applications

5G Broadcast is one of the main directions of innovation in the audiovisual distribution sector. Rai Way plays an active role in this evolution through research and experimental projects, developed in collaboration with institutions, universities, and technology partners, to evaluate the applicability of new solutions to content production and distribution.

This technology enables simultaneous transmission to an unlimited number of users, without consuming mobile data and without requiring a SIM card, while ensuring consistent, predictable quality.

The ongoing trials aim to assess coverage, performance, and potential use cases, with a focus on cultural, artistic, informational, and entertainment applications.

Our projects

5G Audiovisual Broadcast Broadband Network

Among the most significant initiatives is the 5G Audiovisual Broadcast Broadband Network project, winner of the MIMIT “5G Audiovisivo 2022” call for proposals. Rai Way served as project leader of a consortium made up of 11 partners, including public bodies, technology companies, and universities. The project tested innovative use cases ranging from distributed TV production over private 5G networks, to VR360 immersive filming, and live content delivery in mobility, integrated within automotive infotainment systems.

Other 5G Broadcasting Trials

In addition to this initiative, Rai Way is engaged in several other 5G Broadcasting experiments, including:

  • Coverage testing in the Aosta Valley, focusing on mobile reception;
  • Activation of a pre-commercial service in five cities, broadcasting high-quality, low-latency “free-to-air” content;
  • Development of live video contribution solutions over private 5G networks, for professional applications such as news and live events;
  • VR 180° immersive filming with binaural audio, for live and on-demand distribution of cultural and artistic content.
