Software-based IP Matrix and Head End for signal management

At the heart of Rai Way’s core-business evolution is the IP Matrix, a new audio/video transport and distribution infrastructure. It was brought into service alongside the adoption of MPEG-4 encoding for digital terrestrial distribution, together with new Head Ends installed in the purpose-built Monte Mario datacenter in Rome.

An innovative audio/video distribution network

With the IP Matrix, Rai Way has introduced a new network for switching and transporting audio/video signals that combines the strengths of traditional SDI and ASI matrices with the flexibility and scalability of IP technology.

Connected to upgraded Head End platforms, the infrastructure delivers a flexible, scalable, dynamic, low-latency and—above all—reliable network, thanks to advanced protection systems.

Implementing the IP Matrix is a step-change in infrastructure management, optimising resource use and simplifying operators’ activities: a decisive move that opens the way to new services aligned with the evolution of the broadcast sector.

Head End: a flexible infrastructure for future services

Rai Way has built 15 new Head End platforms, a significant project in the Italian broadcast landscape. At the core of the solution—designed for DTH, DTT, IPTV and OTT distribution of live SD, HD and UHD content—is a software-based encoder for high-quality, high-density video processing.

The platforms support the most advanced codecs, including HEVC and SHVC, and integrate IP technology with the new uncompressed video standards SMPTE 2022-6 and SMPTE 2110.

A state-of-the-art infrastructure that ensures flexibility and paves the way for new services in line with the evolution of the broadcast sector.

The new Data Center at Rome Monte Mario

The Rome Monte Mario Data Center was created to host the new encoding and multiplexing platforms for DTT, SAT and DAB services for RAI and third-party customers.

This new Data Center is a strategic hub: the IP Matrix connects RAI’s main urban sites in Rome (Via Teulada, Saxa Rubra and Via Asiago) with Monte Mario, carrying:

  • Uncompressed video signals to the Head End platforms
  • Compressed signals to Rai Way’s terrestrial and satellite distribution networks.
