The new era of digital terrestrial

In August 2024, Italian television took another evolutionary step by introducing the DVB-T2 standard and HEVC encoding. Rai Way led this transformation, improving broadcast quality and opening new opportunities for broadcasters and viewers.

The benefits of DVB-T2

The switch to DVB-T2 takes broadcast quality to a new level:

More channels and higher quality

HD and 4K transmissions

Efficient spectrum use

More content on the same frequency

Interactive experiences

Access to advanced services and multimedia content

What changed with the new digital terrestrial

  • Rai Storia, Rai Storia, Rai Radio 2 Visual and Rai Scuola are now available exclusively in DVB-T2 and in high definition.
  • Rai 1 HD, Rai 2 HD, Rai 3 HD, Rai 4 HD, Rai Premium HD and Rai News 24 HD are broadcast in simulcast (DVB-T and DVB-T2).
  • No changes for Rai 1, Rai 2, Rai 3 and Rai News 24 in standard definition.

To receive the full Rai offering, retuning is recommended, even for devices already compatible with the new standard.

Further measures for enhanced signal quality

Following the completion of the transition to DVB-T2, Rai Way continued its commitment to ensuring optimal TV signal reception, carrying out targeted interventions in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia—areas particularly sensitive to interference linked to summer propagation phenomena.

On 1 July 2025, the Mux-B was reconfigured on 22 transmission sites in the two regions and neighbouring areas. This operation realigned the radiated signals, significantly improving reception quality along the coastline and in inland areas.

Rai 1, Rai 2 and Rai 3 can now be received in excellent quality also in HD (channels 501, 502, 503), carried by Mux-B.

This initiative is part of a national plan for technological evolution aimed at strengthening the resilience of the broadcasting system and delivering a better TV experience across the country.

Rai Way’s contribution

Milestones in digital terrestrial innovation

2008–2012 – From analogue switch-off to Digital Terrestrial Television

Between 2008 and 2012, Rai Way led the transition from analogue television to digital terrestrial. The process began in Sardinia—the pilot region—and concluded on 4 July 2012 in Sicily with the shutdown of the last analogue signal. An evolution that improved broadcast quality and made radio spectrum use more efficient.

October 2021 - Transition to MPEG-4 and IP Matrix

In October 2021, migration began from MPEG-2 encoding to the more modern MPEG-4 for several thematic channels, optimising bandwidth management and improving video quality while maintaining standard definition. During the same period, Rai Way introduced a new IP Matrix, an audio/video switching network that combines the simplicity of traditional technologies with the flexibility and scalability of IP technology.

January-June 2022 - Frequency refarming and local broadcasting

In the first half of 2022, frequency refarming was completed, freeing the 700 MHz band for mobile telephony and reorganising the spectrum allocated to TV. At the same time, Rai Way has strengthened its presence in local broadcasting, acquiring frequency usage rights in eight key regions (Lombardy, Piedmont, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Lazio, Apulia, Basilicata, and Sicily) and providing services to over 150 local broadcasters.

August 2024 – Introduction of DVB-T2 and HD channels

On 28 August 2024, Rai Way completed a new evolutionary step by introducing the DVB-T2 standard and the HEVC video encoding on the national Mux-B. This upgrade enabled HD channel transmission, improving picture quality and overall network efficiency.
