Edge Data Center Network

Digital technology is transforming every aspect of our lives, from our communication to the way we work. Mobile technology, social networks, cloud computing, and M2M (machine to machine) communication technology are all commonplace, permeating many aspects of our day-to-day life. This generates an enormous amount of data which is greatly appreciated by the market.

At the dawn of a mass diffusion of technologies such as 5G, IoT, and AI, digital transformation is already taking place, and will soon arrive in a new phase; this will cause a further increase in data production.

These new technologies, which are immersive, smart, and autonomous, are diffusing through an increasing number of sectors, from industry 4.0 to gaming. The data generated is also increasingly time-sensitive; in this context, it is important to pay attention to the latency of telecommunication networks, which must remain at less than a millisecond. These are also known as “ultra-low-latencies".

How do we respond to new market needs?

To sustain the digital transformation currently taking place, a greater data management capacity is needed, as well as a higher processing speed.

The traditional Data Center model, which is centralised, is not sufficient in fulfilling this new demand. The transmission and processing of enormous volumes of data in large, centralised data centers produces latency times which aren’t compatible with new technology. Transmission to Edge Data Centers, however, is much more efficient. Usually smaller central data centers, these are better-distributed and process data much closer to the end-users, significantly reducing latency times.

Rai Way’s Edge Data Center Network

The Edge Data Center, in terms of its features, allows for all applications which require real-time functionality. From automated industrial systems to cloud gaming and telemedicine… The potential applications of the Edge paradigm are immeasurable – and we intend to be the first infrastructural operators to develop this on a national level.

We are planning and implementing a Data Center network which can offer a server housing low-latency connectivity and high flexibility to TLC operators and service providers such as gaming, IoT, OTT, and AI.

Our infrastructure, distributed across the country, is formed of neutral carriers, connected to the largest national fibre optic connection infrastructure sites. The network will consist in:

  • Edge Data Centers, located and designed to fulfil needs of proximity and low latency;
  • larger Data Centers, designed for hyperscale operators, which are able to ensure the scalability of infrastructure and a higher speed in the implementation of highly customised solutions.

The advantages of our Edge Data Center

Low latency

Moving the data processing capacity to the edge of the network, closer to users, reduces the physical distance travelled by data, thus resulting in faster response times. The widespread distribution of our Data Center networks across the country will help to efficiently support the needs and local processing of data.

Traffic optimisation

The Edge Data Center is tasked with – both independently and in combination with traditional data centers – the management of specific traffic peaks. The carrier neutrality feature of our solution will guarantee greater control, flexibility, and scalability in network capacity.

Cost reduction

Among the elements of Information Technology, connectivity is the most expensive. A distributed Data Center network reduces the need for high-speed connection for data transfer. Greater network performance is reserved only for urgent data, for immediate use, whilst other data can be managed with basic connectivity.

Sustainable choice

We are designing our Data Center with a focus upon sustainability, prioritising renewable resources and the use of energy-efficient components. This will optimise the levels of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and reduce CO2 emissions. This is supported also by the level of automation selected for our Data Center, which will allow for a reduction in emissions related to any movement necessary for the operation of our sites, as well as reducing intervention times in case of faults.
