Rai Way’s infrastructure evolution: a strategic bridge between broadcasting and IP

Over the decades, television has undergone a profound evolution—from analog signals to digital networks, from rooftop antennas to fiber-optic connections, and from linear programming to on-demand content. Yet one constant remains: the need for a signal that is stable, reliable, and universally accessible.

The widespread adoption of Connected TVs has revolutionized how Italian households access and experience audiovisual content. Today’s viewers expect personalized, interactive, high-definition experiences—delivered instantly and seamlessly across all devices. This shift is placing new demands on infrastructure, requiring the fusion of broadcasting’s proven reliability with the agility and scalability of IP-based technologies.

Beyond broadcasting: architectures designed for change

At Rai Way, we have strategically invested in a next-generation network built to meet these evolving needs. Our fiber-optic backbone now stretches over 6,000 kilometers, complemented by more than 500 radio links that ensure consistent coverage—even in the most remote areas of the country. At the same time, we have developed a proprietary Content Delivery Network (CDN) and deployed a distributed network of regional Edge Data Centers, engineered to provide high-quality, low-latency, and highly stable content delivery.

These advancements enable us to extend traditional broadcasting with a robust suite of multiplatform services—from live streaming and video on demand to advanced solutions tailored for local broadcasters. Today, even smaller operators can leverage technologies that were once the exclusive domain of major players.

From network to field: sharing the transformation with industry professionals

This transformation also engages the professionals who work hands-on in the field, supporting end users every day. The first stop of the Tivùsat & Partners Roadshow, held in Florence on March 6, offered a valuable opportunity to present our vision directly to installers, systems engineers, and audiovisual technicians.

During the event, our Chief Broadcasting & Media Officer, Eng. Umberto Babuscio, highlighted how the television landscape is undergoing an unprecedented shift. “The rise of OTT platforms, growing demand for customized content, and the need for greater interactivity are reshaping the way audiences engage with entertainment,” he said. “In this new environment, broadcast network operators must move swiftly, adopting innovative strategies to meet changing consumer expectations. From multiplatform distribution and data monetization to social media integration and the use of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence—the challenges are significant, but the opportunities are even greater.”

Our evolving infrastructure and service model are fully aligned with these trends, empowering broadcasters and media professionals to seize new opportunities through flexible, tailored, and highly reliable solutions.
