A significant step towards the Rai Group’s digital future

Rome, 17 March 2026 – Rai - Radiotelevisione Italiana S.p.A. and Rai Way S.p.A., a Rai Group company and a leading national operator of integrated digital infrastructure, today presented, at the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, in the presence of Minister Adolfo Urso and the Mayor of Pomezia, Veronica Felici, the project for the Hyperscale Data Centre that Rai Way will build in Pomezia, near Rome.

The initiative, which has recently been granted planning permission, forms part of Rai Way’s strategic diversification and digital infrastructure evolution plan, in line with Rai’s transformation into a Digital Media Company.

This transformation also sees Rai engaged in the development and consolidation of the RaiPlay and RaiPlay Sound digital platforms, the expansion of DAB+ digital radio, the evolution of content production and distribution models, and the introduction of advanced technological standards.

According to Minister Aldolfo Urso “In an era in which data management has become an issue affecting both cultural identity and national security, the Hyperscale project marks a concrete step forward on the path toward the country’s full digital sovereignty. This Data Center will ensure that Rai’s heritage – a heritage belonging to all Italians – is safeguarded within a secure, resilient infrastructure rooted in the national territory. Once again, public service broadcasting demonstrates its ability to meet the challenges of modernity, combining its historic mission as a broadcaster with that of a modern Tech Media Company.”

A modern Rai Way which, with the granting of planning permission for the Pomezia Hyperscale Data Centre, will be able to develop a new strategic asset, strengthening its role as an infrastructure player capable of supporting the country’s digital evolution and contributing to the creation of cloud capacity and data management distributed across the national territory, with a view to technological autonomy and digital sovereignty.

The project, whose development methods and timelines also envisage discussions with potential interested operators, features a modular design and provides for the construction of a next-generation hyperscale facility over an area of approximately 140,000 square metres, with a total of 16,000 square metres of data halls distributed across four independent buildings, each comprising four data halls of 1,000 square metres. The infrastructure will be designed in accordance with ANSI/TIA-942 Rated-4 standards, the highest level in terms of reliability and resilience for data centres, and will be powered 100% by renewable energy sources.

The campus will be able to develop four functional modules, each with an IT capacity of 8.8 MW and a total capacity of 35.2 MW, with potential for further expansion. The architecture will be highly flexible to meet the needs of hyperscale and cloud customers, with customisable configurations in terms of density, layout and cooling systems.

Authorisation is also underway for a photovoltaic plant with an initial capacity of 5.5 MW, which will partially support the campus’s energy supply.

The choice of Pomezia and the Rome area for the development of this new asset reflects specific strategic considerations. Rome represents a central hub for the development of the country’s digital infrastructure. Its proximity to the main Mediterranean submarine cable landing stations, the presence of a major local Internet Exchange Point, and the availability of high-capacity fibre connections make the area a natural hub for the development of next-generation cloud services and data centres.

The creation of a major digital hub in Central and Southern Italy will strengthen the resilience of the national system and enable the development of new “availability zones” for businesses and public administration, ensuring operational continuity and disaster recovery solutions.
