Innovation and quality are our values

We have always chosen to meet the technological challenges and opportunities arising in the broadcasting and telecommunication sectors by investing in developing and upgrading the quality of our services and the efficiency of our networks.

Technological Projects

Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT or DVB- T), was expedited in 2003 with a view to complying with regulatory provisions (Law n.112/04) and it represents one of the most important projects in this sector. Rai Way has met all the established network development deadlines through the time-efficient implementation of a DTT network in Italy which reached 50% of the national population by the end of 2003 and 70% by the 31st of December 2004.

In 2007, Rai Due broadcasts were switched over to DTT in Sardinia and in Valle d’Aosta while the switchover of all TV broadcasts in Sardinia to a digital terrestrial platform was finalised in 2008.

Digital Radio and, more specifically, the launch of experimentation on DAB+/DMB broadcasting techniques have become crucial to the Company’s development strategies since 2007, the year in which several agreements were closed and the first trials were expedited. March 2008 marked the establishment of the Associazione per la Radiofonia Digitale in Italia – ARD – in partnership with Aeranti-Corallo and RNA, which further reiterated Rai Way’s commitment in this direction.

What are the upcoming challenges?

  • In connection to DTT multiplexes A and B, a further target pursued by the Company is represented by the extension of signal delivery to 85% of the population. This renewal process was expedited at the end of 2007 and, once it is in full operation, envisages the conversion of approximately 240 broadcasting and transmission stations.

  • Concomitantly to its expanded coverage, Rai Way has also been promoting the progressive switchover of all TV stations still broadcasting in analogue to a digital terrestrial platform. As laid down in Law 101/08, the switch-off process expedited in Sardinia is envisaged to gradually spread throughout the other Regions in Italy and to be finalised by 2012.

  • Another important future milestone along the road to "digital" technology concerns the full-power start-up of High Definition TV broadcasts on a digital terrestrial platform. To this effect, an important preview of HD television broadcasting was provided during the 2008 European Football Championship in the metropolitan areas of Milan, Rome and Turin, as well as in the region of Sardinia and of Valle d’Aosta.

  • On the front of Digital Radio, the efforts of Rai Way have been focused on providing support and collaboration to radio broadcasters in developing and testing the potential of additional radio broadcasting services enabled by BIFS, T-PEG, DSL, Visual Radio and slide-show technologies

  • The application of new technologies, like TETRA and Wi-Max within the framework of Wireless telecommunications and DVB-H in the field of television broadcasting, continues to represent an on-going effort for all the branches of Rai Way, which aim at singling out successful applications and emerging markets.
