Transmission Network

The Rai Way transmission network is primarily used for distribution services (including DTT, DAB and MF) and TV and radio contribution.

The main asset for long-distance transmissions is the fibre optic network (using IP/MPLS technology and integrated with DTM technology for video content) with high bit rate connections (up to Nx10 Gb/s and Nx1Gb/s), which reach all of Rai's Production Centres and regional offices.

Today, DTM technology guarantees high definition (HD) contribution services between the regional offices. The network is also full HD ready and prepared for 4K.

The network architecture:

  • ensures a high level of reliability;
  • is flexible and can be extended if required for specific, short-term events (for example, temporary contribution events);
  • is supplemented by the radio link network, comprising a primary backbone in SDH technology, mainly in the 2 and 4 GHz range. There is also a series of peripherals made up of DVB-ASI technology radio links specifically for the broadcasting service.

As well as the main links with production sites, the access network includes:

  • Satellite links to support remote transmissions from mobile broadcasting vehicles via satellite;
  • Urban fibre optic connections, predominantly located in Rome and Milan, used to connect important cultural sites and sports arenas as well as various administrative and governmental offices.

The Rai Way transmission network also carries out activities including:

  • Contribution: the exchange of programmes between regional offices (such as Rai's regional headquarters) and the Production Centres (in the case of Rai, located in Rome, Milan, Turin and Naples) to support the editorial activities of the main television networks and newspapers of Italian and international broadcasters;
  • Distribution: the transmission of national and regional radio and television programmes to all transmission centres (primary broadcasting centres, which form the basis for the broadcasting network).

The Rai Way transmission network complies is compliant with the radio link quality and availability performance parameters defined by international legislation regulating links regulation.

The quality and availability performance levels correspond to those defined by ITU (International Telecommunication Union) regulations; in particular, availability of the longest connection identifiable on the network is not less than 99.9% per year.
